Initial situation
Brief overview:
50+ media clippings | Science in the public eye | Record reach in the DACH region
Prof. Carsten Welsch, renowned particle physicist at the University of Liverpool and leading researcher at CERN, led groundbreaking experiments on antimatter as part of the AEgIS project. The aim: to gain unique insights into how antimatter behaves in the Earth’s gravitational field and to present innovative solutions for extending the lifetime of positronium – a milestone in modern physics.
In the DACH region, there was limited public understanding and little presence of complex particle physics topics in the leading media in the run-up to the event.
The challenge
- Highly complex research topic that is difficult to understand even for many science journalists
- Major international competition for attention with scientific breakthroughs
- Goal: Visibility in quality media, presence beyond specialist magazines
Strategy
- Combining emotion and intellect: Translating complex findings into understandable formats that arouse enthusiasm while maintaining scientific depth.
- Addressing the big questions facing humanity: Staging anti-matter research as the key to understanding matter, the Big Bang and existence.
- Storytelling with personality: positioning Prof. Welsch as a charismatic ambassador for his research.
Implementation
- Media-friendly presentation of research results
- Arrangement and support of cross-media coordinated interviews with leading science journalists from RTV stations, print and online media and science podcasts throughout the DACH region
- Organization of an individual press trip of the news magazine NEWS to CERN in Geneva
Result
- A total of over 50 clippings throughout the DACH region, including reports in MDR Wissen, SFR, ORF Science, Radio Ö1 journals, daily newspaper Der Standard
- 10-page cover story in the news magazine "News" ("The search for the Big Bang", issue 35/2024)
- Outstanding reach in the DACH region, including 295 thousand print and 11 million unique clients online
- Increasing requests for interviews with Prof. Welsch, also on other research topics
